70 Years of Virtuosity

Duane Hulbert - Piano
Friday, October 10, 2008, 8:00pm

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - Sergei Rachmaninoff
Symphony #5 - Ludwig van Beethoven

As Beethoven himself, the Fifth Symphony is music of concentrated energy, struggle and triumph.  This emotionally charged, forward moving work will lift you out of your seat.  Although Rachmaninov's Rhapsody was completed in 1934, this work belongs in the grand tradition of 19th Century virtuosity and like Beethoven's Fifth, it is one of the most popular classical works ever written.

Pictures at an Exhibition - Mussorgsky

The gorgeous colors and contrasting textures in Ravel's orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition have made it a showpiece for virtuoso conductors and virtuoso orchestras alike.  Deeply moved by the watercolors and drawings placed on exhibition shortly following the artist's death, Mussorgsky decided to take ten of these pictures as subjects to be set to music.  They stand as a lasting tribute to one of his dearest friends.

Symphony No 8 - Antonin Dvorak
Concerto for Violin - Johannes Brahms

Dvorak's New World is the most popular of his symphonies; Symphony No 8, however, is the most inspired.  It is spontaneous and unpretentious much like the Bohemian countryside, yet his symphony exhibits all the qualities so admired by the German master and Dvorak's mentor, Johannes Brahms.
